The modules are designed to help address critical issues in managers' roles. Some are more operational:
Leading and Managing in Context
This module will look at the historical, theoretical, political and local context of leading and management in health and social care. It will introduce you to the main concepts in the study of organisations and their environment, to issues such as structure and culture, and to the background to the development of the managerial role. Leading Service Evaluation and Improvement
This module looks at how to review and design systems that meet user and other stakeholder requirements efficiently and effectively. It explores how quality is assessed, and how to plan improvements in systems processes and outcomes. It also addresses how service delivery is resourced, and covers the principles of financial budgeting and costing.) Fuller details.
Leading and Managing People
This module takes a deeper look at your personal style, and how to manage working with others who may have different values and styles. It looks at how to promote good individual and team performance, and manage operational performance systems. It also covers the principles of 'change management', and how to develop change through people. Fuller details.
Some modules take a more strategic view
Consultancy in Action
A very different (and highly evaluated) module, where you learn from action. It includes the principles of consultancy and action learning, and reminders about change management techniques. As part of a small 'learning set' of other students, you'll find an appropriate client organisation and carry out a short 'consultancy', where you explore a topic for the client and make recommendations via a report and a presentation. Managing and Commissioning for Performance
This looks at the ideas of 'performance management', and the design and evaluation frameworks for the specification, control, and regulation of a specific service, in order to build constructive ways of using those frameworks to improve the governance and delivery of services. It links closely to the Strategic Commissioning And Marketing module. That module examines the strategic processes behind configuring and formulating a strategic/ business plan for services: this module looks at how to ensure the process of implementation is done in a way that meets the strategic purposes. Strategy, marketing and commissioning
Using your own service/ role as a 'case study', you will develop a strategic plan. Issues covered will include Strategy, strategic and stakeholder analysis, generating and evaluating strategic options for service delivery/ commissioning, notions and models of commissioning, cost benefit analysis /procurement and provision. and marketing and competition in care sector organisations.
