Leadership in health and social care

What we do

We are a small, friendly team of experienced staff, based in the School of Health and Social Sciences and with links to the Bolton Business School. We have a wide range of management experience in working in care services. We teach academic programmes, do consultancy, and can provide a range of tailored development interventions, including training and psychometric testing (including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator).

Improving services while you study

We see the point of study as being to gain better thinking skills and knowledge in order to improve life for staff, oneself, and most of all for the users of our services. This guides the design of our programmes, and especially the design of any assessment. All our assessment involves the critical analysis of some aspect of a service, and the development of strategies to improve that service.

Qualifications

Most people who work with us come from organisations in health, social care, and the voluntary sector. They combine study and demanding jobs, and we are very aware of the pressures this brings, and try to adapt our programmes to accommodate this.

They study modules |and gain qualifications in our Post-graduate pathway. Students on the pathway have very varied leadership and managerial responsibilities: they include commissioners and providers; clinicians and non-clinicians; strategic and operational managers. Most come via word-of-mouth from previous students, and they are looking for a supportive academic environment, which helps them do their job.

In this qualification structure, you can begin by building up a Postgraduate Certificate,  and then build on this to gain a Post-Graduate Diploma and finally, a Masters degree.

Corporate Clients

We have several corporate clients, for whom we have designed development programmes. For example, recently we have designed and delivered programmes for senior managers in both Liverpool and Bolton PCTs, where cohorts of senior managers have competed year long programmes and emerged with a post-graduate management qualification. We also advise, quality assure and accredit programmes that are delivered by people working in care services e.g. we have accredited a local mental health trusts in-house management development programme, delivered by the Training department, so managers gained a qualification on completion.
