The Placement

This is a 20 credit, level 3 module, which allows you to negotiate a placement in a workplace of your choice.  This allows you to gain valuable experience at a workplace that matches your career aspirations, thus increasing your employability.

The Project

This is a 30 credit, level 3 module where you design and implement a research project that interests you and can be linked to your career aspirations.  Projects may be laboratory, field or desk based and the subject that you research is negotiated with your tutor, but you are mostly able to research whichever topic you choose. Past students have even had their projects published in the journal Bioscience Horizons|.

Past projects include:  

  • A study on the variation in orchids at Nob End LNR
  • Lemur behaviour at Chester Zoo
  • Mate preference in rare fish at Bolton Museum
  • Sustainability of local school buildings
  • Recycling and reuse in Bolton
  • The effect of disturbance on the genetic diversity of aquatic plants
  • The effect of water quality on canal plants
  • Biochemical variation in woodlice
