Roger was until recently the Regional Consultant with the Higher Education Council for England (HEFCE). After graduating from Cambridge Roger entered teaching, becoming particularly interested in "distance education". He worked for the Open University from its inception and remains very interested in distance learning.

In 1992 Roger was appointed BP Professor of Learning Development at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside, working on the development of a "new learning environment" and the first employment-based skills course in the country.

Roger was appointed as Regional Consultant for HEFCE in 1998 where he had national responsibilities, as well as covering the northern regions.

Roger is also active in a voluntary capacity with a number of organisations, including the Friends of Beverley Minster and the Georgian Society for East Yorkshire.
