Is there the option to take a full year out during the course?
Yes, we would temporarily suspend your registration and the you can come back and continue from where you left off. it would not be sensible to suspend studies part way through the academic year - you should plan to leave in July and return a year and a bit later in September

Do you provide workshops to help with interviews?
Yes. Within the university there is a careers section within the Student Centre a person is responsible for developing interviewing skills, CV writing skills and communications skills. We also have modules within the programme which will address these needs as well. In fact from level 1 you start to develop your presentation and communications skills, which help you to manage your time and communicate with others and also address the needs of interviewing.

Do you teach any dialects of C other than C++? Are you thinking of teaching C#?
At the moment we teach only C++. Most applications software nowadays is written in C++. We are considering introducing a new final year module on C# and web services.

We use Oracle because it is a main industry standard.

How many hours will I be timetabled to be on campus for per week?
Generally speaking - 9-12 hours class time with a total of 37and a half hours of recommended study per week.
A full-time student studying for 60 credits during a semester will need to be able to allocate, on average, at least 37.5 hours per week for study and assessment during term time.

How long will it take to complete a Degree/HND?
All courses are semester based. Each academic year has 2 semesters.
Semester 1- Sept to Feb & Semester 2 - Feb to July.
Courses within CET are either:
•Conventional 3 year degrees having 2 A level entry
•3.5 year degree incorporating a 2 year HND – 1 A level
•4 year degree incorporating a balancing semester and a 2 year HND – mature entry.
•5 years for Part time study modes.
–Full Time = 60 credits/semester,
–Part Time = 40 credits/semester.

Can I transfer to another course from the course I am currently on?
Yes, you can generally change course, although it may be that some of the modules you have already passed do not contribute to your new pathway, which means that your period of study will be extended. Before doing anything, you should talk to your LEA to see if there will be financial implications.
We offer Course flexibility in the following ways:
•A variety of course entry points appropriate to entry qualifications
•Various course exit qualifications
•Facility to swap from full-time to part-time mode or vice versa
•Provision to temporarily suspend the course
•Opportunity to transfer to alternative courses

I am looking for a general computing degree. Which course do you recommend?
For a general computing degree the BSc (Hons) Computing within CIS .|
The Computing pathway is designed to offer students the opportunity to study computing either as a single subject or in combination with other subjects. The choice of modules within the pathway is very flexible.
On completion of the Computing Pathway, depending on the modules chosen, the student will have knowledge of and skills in the following:

designing, writing and testing computer systems

structured systems analysis and design

object oriented approaches to software development

advanced database theory and techniques

using and developing information retrieval systems

measurement and control in software engineering

use and understanding of current operating systems

software development for the internet

CET is arranged into three academic areas:
• CIT – Computing & Internet Technology
• Computing with a blend or integration of soft and hardware
• CIS – Computing & Information Systems
• Computing that has a commercial software analysis, design and development focus.
• ECE – Electronic & Computer Engineering
• Engineering design and development of Electronic component.

I can only attend classes in the evening. Which courses are available?
The following courses within the department of Computing and Electronic Technology provide the option to study in the evenings only:
BSc (Hons) Internet Systems Development |
The course is 3 years full-time (4.5 years part-time). There is an accelerated route through the course for applicants with HND/C Computing. The course may also be studied in evening only mode.
Bc (Hons) Software Development |
The BSc (Hons) Software Development may be taken full-time, part-time or evening only.
HNC Business Software Development |
HNC Business Software Development will be available in evening only mode two evenings per week for two years.
BTEC HNC Computing |
Two evenings per week between 6:00pm and 9:00pm, normally on a Tuesday and Thursday. The course starts in September, with some opportunity for starting in February. For students with good grades for the second year, it may be possible to join our degree course where they will be given credit for the work they have already done. Beyond that there are opportunities to progress onto a Modular Masters programme.
BSc (Hons) Business Software Development |
The course duration is 3 years full time, 4.5 years part time. The course is also available for evening study.
BSc (Hons) Computing |
The course is 3 years full-time (4.5 years part-time). There is an accelerated route through the pathway for applicants with HND/C Computing. The Computing Pathway may be taken as an evening only course.
Short Courses |
We provide a variety of basic/intermediate short courses covering various aspects of computing, electronics and IT held in the evening.
