FAQ's - Courses: Access Courses
What is an Access course? (access to technology)
The main aim of Access programmes is to prepare adult learners from non-traditional backgrounds and under-represented groups for admission to undergraduate education.
Access programmes are specially designed to prepare mature students for entry into HE and provide the underpinning knowledge and skills needed to progress to a degree or diploma course at a university or college. These programmes enable mature students who lack the necessary educational background (ie level 2 and level 3 qualifications of O levels, GCSEs and A levels/AGNVQs) to acquire the Access to HE qualification which is equivalent in standard to these qualifications.
A typical Access programme takes either a year full-time or one or two years part-time although it is sometimes possible to spread study over a longer period.
All Access to HE programmes which are approved under the QAA Recognition Scheme (ie recognised courses in England , Wales and Northern Ireland ) are listed on the UCAS Access Courses database. This database provides regularly updated course details giving course title, tutor contact, curriculum, methods of assessment, and requirements for achieving the Access to HE certificate for all approved Access courses.
