Media Studios
We have state-of-the-art labs available for the exclusive use of our students. Multimedia and Website Development studios have recently been refurbished with "Mesh" machines; they include DVD writers and full multimedia development kit, Adobe software and some sound processing.
For Computer games Software Development each lab has 25 PCs with high-specification graphics cards. One lab has a dozen Sony PlayStation development kits and twenty five PS2 development kits. The Internet Systems Lab machines incorporate both Microsoft and Linux operating systems.
Multimedia and Website Development
The studio has recently been refurbished with "Mesh" machines; they include DVD writers and full multimedia development kit, Macromedia software and some sound processing. The machines have video processing capabilities. Also available are piano keyboards (midi interface) and cameras.
Digital Media Studio - Usability Lab
The studio is equipped with a number of cameras which enable students to capture video and sound in preparation to become part of a multimedia package. The control room has a "Shuttle net cube" - a high performance video processing box.
Computer Games Software Development
The Computer Games labs include a number of Sony Playstations. Combination of capturing systems including cameras. There are sophisticated sound cards in these machines. The playstations are worked through an add-on kit which provides a Linux operating system which enables us to produce software and port it to the playstation for testing in real-time operating.
The labs operate within a security umbrella operated by Department. The Departmental network enables people to work on machines and communicate between labs with minimal risk of compromising the university's network. It means we can allow our students far more freedom than would be the case in a conventional network environment.
Internet Systems Development
All the machines have a dual operating system - both Microsoft and Linux reside on all the machines at any one time. The Windows operating system can be remotely installed to be either Windows XP desktop, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2003 Server. Applications include Visio Studio, Microsoft Office, integration of databases.
