Why study Music and Creative Business at Bolton?

Music and creative business is a new area for Bolton University and our strap line moving forward is 'Work Ready'. The Music and Creative industries throughout the UK and Europe cross cut markets leading to a sector that is more economically powerful than the agricultural or energy sector in terms of gross added value. Students will gain the skills to become business savvy in an area which is constantly changing, evolving and requires an entrepreneurial mind. The course is supported and taught by music and creative industry specialists who see value in creating work ready individuals who will be able to contribute to the various creative and music businesses. A series of 'Guru' seminars from the music and creative industries will provide a current overview of the industries which will allow students to apply a more independent understanding, analysis, evaluation and application to their academic activity.

What is it all about? / What will I learn on this course?

Students will cover areas which are prevalent in the music and creative areas including, e business, PR and marketing, finance for business, people management, organisation strategy and planning, event management and group pitching where students team up to become an events team in a joint venture with Bolton council to hold a music and creative festival in Queens Park. They will plan, market and run the event which aim to bring the community of Bolton together for a day of multi cultural music, arts, fashion and family entertainment.

How will this course help me to get a job?

The course will provide you with balanced theoretical learning combined with practical hands on experience in the different areas surrounding the music and creative industries. Regular industry networking events will provide opportunities to swap business cards and to pitch to future potential employers. During your third year you will be undertake a work placement in your specialist area in a real working environment related to your chosen pathway, which allows you to put the skills you have learnt into practice.

What are the special features / what's unique about this course?

The course is supported by specialists from the industry who will provide regular 'Guru' lectures and take part in classroom workshops related to the modules you are studying. Specialists include Jon Webster (Music Managers Forum), Paul Morley (Journalist and Author), Karen Gabay (BBC Radio Manchester), Steve Machin (TixDaq), Dave Lawrence (Tour Manager, The Streets, Dizzee Rascal, Madness), Terrie Doherty (Promotions Katie Melua) and Rob Adamson (Reverb Publishing) plus many more to be confirmed. Industry specialists Music Ally will work with students via an educational package to monitor the digital music and media scene, break industry news and innovative practice, spot trends and predict future strategies for the music and media industries.
