Creative Technologies

The Creative Technologies degree and HND are designed to provide you with the broad range of skills and knowledge needed for employment in the digital media industries. You will be able to select modules from the creative technologies group of courses to construct a personalised learning programme customised to your own particular interests and career aspirations.

The digital media industry needs practitioners that are knowledgeable and skilled across a range of disciplines. An ideal design team member will not only be skilled in a particular specialism but also possess a good working understanding of the other specialisms within the team. These courses provide an environment in which you will acquire this multi-disciplinary expertise. You will practice and develop your team-working skills while gaining specialist knowledge through studying your selected themed pathway and associated assignment and project activities. You select appropriate modules at each of the three levels. By doing so, you can devise your own theme for the course, with combinations of modules that enable you to major in a particular aspect of the creative industries while acquiring an overall appreciation of the business. These are just a few of the possible combinations:

  • Sound with Games – A combination of sound and games modules aimed at sound designers in games development teams.
  • Sound with Special Effects –­ A combination of special effects and sound modules aimed at sound designers on special effects development teams.
  • Sound with Multimedia – A combination of multimedia and sound modules aimed at sound designers on multimedia and website development teams.
  • Special Effects with Games - A combination of games and special effects modules aimed at effects designers on games development teams.
  • Special Effects with Multimedia - A combination of multimedia and special effects modules aimed at effects designers on multimedia and website development teams.

 

Special features

The Creative Technologies courses are "skills rich". Extensive use is made of laboratory work, design exercises, projects and practical assignments. You will acquire the necessary vocational skills to pursue a career in the digital media industry, together with a range of transferable key skills including communications, analytical reasoning, interpersonal, self-management and lifelong learning. These courses also develop your ability to analyse, evaluate and resolve problems.

The School of Games Computing and Creative Technologies is able to offer a distinctive learning environment for the delivery of this and other courses in the creative technologies portfolio. We offer an integrated mix of both technological and artistic teaching essential to this academic area. You will acquire a good grounding in the technological infrastructure that underpins the creative process whilst at the same time developing your artistic and design skills. Practical activities such as assignments and project work are offered in a team environment. This enables you to work closely with other students from different academic specialisms towards the implementation of a common creative project. This mirrors an activity common in the creative industries and provides not only a realistic learning scenario but also develops team working skills, inter-disciplinary communication skills and an understanding of the diverse contributions to the creative process.
