Moodle Help

How do I find out if Moodle is experiencing technical issues?

To check on the status of all UoB eLearning systems including Moodle please refer to the eLearning System Status updates on the eLearning Home Page:

eLearning system status notifications are maintained by the eLearning Team during normal working hours. You can report a potential fault by raising a task with the IT Support Desk.

I think Moodle may be experiencing technical issues, how do I report this?

You can report any New technical issues relating to Moodle and associated integrations such as Turnitin by contacting the IT Support Desk.

What browser should I use to access Moodle?

For the best Moodle experience we recommend using the following web browsers in order of preference: 

  1. Google Chrome (minimum version 30.0)
  2. Mozilla Firefox (minimum version 25.0)
  3. Apple Safari (minimum version 6)
  4. Microsoft Internet Explorer (minimum version 11)

Moodle requires that both Cookies and Javascript are enabled within your browser of choice.

Note: In most browsers (not Safari), you can make an exception for Moodle if you don't want to use these settings for all websites.

Recommended Browser Add-ons

  1. A PDF reader to view PDF files
    Download Adobe Reader at https://get.adobe.com/reader/
  2. Adobe Flash Player to enable access to Flash video and interactive media which may be part of your Moodle course.

How do I log in to Moodle?

Your Moodle username and password is the same as your UoB network username and password.

Go to [moodle URL]. To login to Moodle enter you username and password into the login boxes at the top right of the Moodle home page then select the 'Log in' button or press 'Enter' on the keyboard.

Once logged into Moodle you will have full access to all your Moodle courses and integrations such as Turnitin.

I can't log in to Moodle what should I do?

Make sure you do not have CAPS lock turned on when entering your password.

Are you able to login to other UoB systems e.g. Webmail?

  1. If no, it may be that your UoB network account has become locked out, please contact the
    IT Support Desk to request that your account be unlocked or to receive a new password.  
  2. If yes, it may that Moodle is experiencing technical difficulties and the eLearning Team are working to resolve the issue. Please refer to the notifications for eLearning system status on the following page www.bolton.ac.uk/Elearning

How do I access my Moodle courses?

Once logged into Moodle you will find a list of all courses you are enrolled onto within the Course Overview block in the centre of your Moodle Dashboard page (see image below). Select a course title to enter course.

I'm missing courses on Moodle - how do I obtain access to these?

Please contact your tutor(s) for further assistance.

Your tutor(s) is responsible for managing all Moodle courses they have created to support the modules you are taking which includes the enrolment/access for all participants.

Note: The IT Support Desk staff within the Library are NOT able to add you to Moodle courses.

How do I enrol on a Moodle course?

In the majority of circumstances you will be automatically enrolled onto Moodle courses to support the modules you are taking by your tutor(s).

In some circumstances you may be asked to 'self-enrol' onto a Moodle course by your tutor(s). In this case you may have been sent a link to a Moodle course or asked to search for a particular module title/code within Moodle.

  1. If a link to a Moodle course is received:
    Click on the link you have been sent. You will be asked to log into Moodle.
    Click the 'Enrol me' button.
    Your tutor may have set an enrolment key, you will need to enter this, thus allowing you to access the Moodle course.
  2. If you have been asked to search for a Moodle course:
    Log in to Moodle.
    Select Moodle Tools > Search Courses.
    Enter the name/code of the module/resource into the search box and click 'Search'.
    Click the name of the Moodle course you wish to access, then click the 'Enrol me' button.
    Your tutor may have set an enrolment key, you will need to enter this, thus allowing you to access the Moodle course.

'Guest' access is occasionally allowed by tutors. As a guest you can view the course content but will not be able to participate in any activities.

Can I access Moodle from my mobile device?

YES, Moodle provides a mobile app for Android, iOS and Windows devices.

Where can I get further help with Moodle?

Your tutor(s) will be able to provide you with general queries and guidance regarding access to your Moodle courses and associated resources.

More complex issues will be investigated by your tutor(s) in liaison with the eLearning Team.

The IT Support Desk aren't able to deal with eLearning related queires and matters directly but are able to log tasks to be addressed by the eLearning Team.

How do I find out if Turnitin is experiencing technical issues?

Please refer to the Turnitin Status Twitter feed located to the right of this page and on the Moodle home page.

Turnitin regularly tweet system status, performance, security and scheduled maintenance updates.

For UK related issues please look for #TurnitinUK or TurnitinUK 

Service outage times are tweeted in Pacific Standard Time (PST) unless otherwise stated. Please use a time zone converter such as timeanddate.com to convert to UK time remembering to account for GMT or GMT+1 BST (British Summer Time).

What browser should I use to access Turnitin?

For the best Turnitin and Moodle experience we recommend that you use the Google Chrome web browser.

How do I know if any of my Moodle courses contain a Turnitin assignment(s)?

Look out for the following:

I need to submit my work but I can't find a Turnitin assignment within my Moodle course

Initially please ensure that you are in the correct Moodle course.

If you are sure that you are in the correct Moodle course, it may be that your tutor is the process of creating the Turnitin assignment or that it is curently hidden from student view.

How do I submit my work to a Turnitin assignment?

Can I upload multiple files to Turnitin?

YES, if the Turnitin assignment is set up in multiple parts you can submit one piece of work to each part.

Example of a two part Turnitin assignment:

If the Turnitin assignment is set up as one part you will only be able to submit one piece of work.

I can see the Turnitin assignment but can't submit my work

Turnitin assignments can’t accept submissions until the assignment start date and time.

In a similar way you can't submit after the assignment due date unless your tutor has enabled late submissions.

Turnitin keeps rejecting my submission - what file types will Turnitin accept?

It may be that the file type you are attempting to submit is not currently supported by Turnitin.

Turnitin currently accepts the following file types:

  • Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt and .pptx)
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls and .xlsx)
  • OpenOffice Text (.odt)
  • WordPerfect (.wpd)
  • Plain text (TXT)
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • Google Docs via Google Drive (.gdoc files are not acceptable)
  • HTML
  • Adobe PostScript (.ps and .eps)
  • Hangul Word Word Processor file (.hwp)

Your paper must contain a minimum of 25 words, must be under 40MB (or approximately two million characters), less than 400 pages in length, and must not contain spaces in between every letter
(l i k e t h i s).

Turnitin Does Not Support:

  • Microsoft® Works (.wps) file types.
  • Apple Pages file types.
  • Spreadsheets created outside of Microsoft Excel (i.e. .ods).
  • GDOC files (.gdoc) which are just links to online Google Document files, but don't actually contain text or the document's content. Google Drive must be used to upload Google Docs.

Therefore, if you are using an unsupported word processor, you may need to save the file as a .txt or .rtf file in order to upload to Turnitin.

Can I upload image files to Turnitin?

NO, in most circumstances.

Turnitin is a text based similarity detection tool and will reject submissions containing just images unless your tutor has opted to use the 'Allow submission of any type' option for the assignment.

Can I upload videos to Turnitin?

NO. Turnitin is a text based similarity detection tool and will not accept video submissions.

How do I know if my submission(s) was successfully uploaded to Turnitin?

If your submission(s) was successfully uploaded you will receive a digital receipt at the end of each submission process. You have the option to view or print a digital receipt by clicking the 'View Digital Receipt' link to the left of the Submission Title column.

Where can I find my Originality Report (similarity)?

Once a submission has been made to a Turnitin assignment, the submission inbox will contain the submitted paper(s). If your tutor has allowed students to view the Originality Report for their submission(s), a percentage icon will appear once the report(s) has been generated.

I can't see the Originality Report for my initial submission

Your tutor may have elected to hide the similarity score from students.

I have resubmitted my work but can't see the new Originality Report

The Originality Report for any resubmission that is made in an assignment will require an additional twenty four hour delay to generate from the date and time of the resubmission. Resubmitting does not speed up report generation. Reports are generated twenty four hours after the last submisison.

Can I resubmit my assignment to Turnitin?

YES, providing your tutor has allowed resubmission of work until the assignment due date for the Turnitin assignment. In this instance you will be able to overwrite your previous submission until the assignment due date and time.

Note: If you have made a previous submission to the Turnitin assignment you will not be able to resubmit work after the assignment due date even though late submissions may have been allowed by your tutor.

Can I submit my assignment after the due date?

YES, providing your tutor has allowed late submissions for the Turnitin assignment.

In this instance only those who have not already submitted work to the Turnitin assignment will be allowed to submit after the assignment due date.

Note: You are not allowed to overwrite a late submission with a resubmission.

I have an agreed extended submission deadline, how do I submit my work?

In the first instance submit your work as normal. If unable to do so then contact your tutor directly.

How do I access my grade and feedback?

The submission inbox contains the grade given for the submission and the GradeMark icon. After the assignment post date both the grade given and the feedback from the tutor(s) for the submission will be available to view by selecting the GradeMark icon.

Where can I get further help with Turnitin?

In the first instance, please contact your tutor for any specific issues relating to the submission of your work to Turnitin, assignment settings or accessing your grades/feedback.

More complex issues will be investigated by your tutor in liaison with the eLearning Team.
