Why did you choose to study at the University of Bolton?
I attended the open day as I was interested in the Computer Games Design course and, after attending, I quickly felt like I would enjoy my time at the University. The course seemed exactly like what I wanted to do and this persuaded me to choose Bolton.
Why did you choose your course?
I actually changed courses mid-way through my university education, as I felt that Games Design wasn’t right for me so switched to Consumer Product Design. This was a great move for me as it led to my career as a designer. The facilities were amazing, the programme of learning was in depth and involved a lot of real world projects.
What was the best thing about your course?
Having real world projects and real client feedback was invaluable, as it enabled me to learn to accept design critique and set me up for a career in the design industry.
What advantages has your University of Bolton degree given you?
My design course has set me up on my career path: I am now leading a design team and shaping design decisions for a national tech company. None of this would have been possible had I not started my path at the University of Bolton.
What advice would you give new students coming to the University to help them make the most of their time here?
Get involved with everything, join sports teams, go on tours and really immerse yourself in everything university life has to offer.
Were you involved in any clubs and societies as a student?
I played for the University football first team and captained the team in my final year.
What did you enjoy most about your time at Bolton?
I really enjoyed the course but the social side of things at Bolton was superb: playing in the football team gave me a brilliant social life with all the tours and nights out. Being a part of a club or team is really important and will enable you to make the most of your time at Bolton.
How did these experiences or your time at Bolton help shape you as a person moving from being a student to a graduate of the University?
Being a student gave me some really good life experiences that enabled me to look after myself once completing my degree; everything from budgeting my finances to confidence when speaking to people. I joined the University as a shy 18-year-old and left confident and ready to take on the world.
Was the first job that you took after graduation related to your degree?
I joined a local firm as an in-house junior designer.
What is your current position? Can you briefly describe your career journey from your time as a student until the present day?
I am currently a design manager for national tech company TyresOnTheDrive.com, heading up the design team with a focus on user experience design and conversion optimisation.
I have also worked as a design manager for The Hut Group, a huge international retail giant, and was head of design for Myprotein.com, Europe’s no.1 sports nutrition brand.
What has your involvement been with the University since you graduated if any?
I have been to reunions and regularly see my uni friends. I still class the people that I lived with as some of my closest friends.
