What is Volunteering?

Broadly speaking, volunteering is an unpaid activity where a person (or group of people) give their time freely to aid a charity, not-for-profit organisation, an individual (to whom they are not related), a group or community.  [See also FAQ's|]

Anyone can volunteer!  You don't need any previous volunteering experience to participate, just enthusiasm, time and a genuine desire to help make a difference.  There are so many opportunities and projects that volunteers participate in that there is sure to be something to suit you!

You can volunteer whilst you are studying, through the holidays or when you graduate.  You can do as much or as little as you want to, whether that's a one-off event, an hour a week or seven days a week, it's up to you.  We will endeavour to help you find something that meets your needs.

Volunteering is FUN!  It's a great way to meet people and make new friends who share similar interests to you, to improve your confidence and skills, to try something new, get involved with the local community and give something back.

It can also be an excellent opportunity to gain new and practical experiences that will complement your academic studies.  You will expand many of the 'soft skills' that employers, colleges and universities value, such as working as part of a team, problem solving and developing initiative.  This could significantly aid your progress in your chosen career and aspirations.

If you register with the volunteering co-ordinator and keep us up-to-date on your volunteering activities, at the end of the academic year you will be presented with a UB-inVolved certificate, which you can add to your CV.  Remember, experience and skills gained from volunteering can improve your job prospects.

Communities' response to the riots deserves to be celebrated

In August this year, thousands of people across the UK came together to clean up their cities following three days of civil unrest.

Through word of mouth, social networking sites and local groups they spontaneously took to the streets in a demonstration of the resilience of our communities.

As a Volunteer Co-ordinator, I am privileged to work with individuals, communities and organisations that are tireless in their efforts to improve the lives of others.

Every day people pull together to tackle the problems that society faces, but it’s perhaps only in times of crisis that it becomes clear just how committed they are to each other and the places they live in.

The sense of community and kindred spirit engendered in many individuals during this time is a feeling well known to those who volunteer regularly, and it is often given as one of the reasons they volunteer in the first place.

If you have been inspired to do something for your community then why not:-
