No matter how good your qualifications are, you still need to shine when completing your job applications.

We understand that its not easy applying for jobs and that advertised vacancies can attract hundreds of applications for just one position.  So you need to be able to stand out from the crowd.

In order to do this think about:

Communicating your value: your ultimate goal is to get the employer to interview you which means showing them how much they need you for the job.  Sell your skills and accomplishments in your CV and job applications.

Use your networks: we all know that many job roles are not posted online. This is why it is essential to stay in contact with your network. They need to know that you are looking for work, and they also need to know what you are looking for.

Research the company or employer you are seeking a job with before the interview. Make sure you know exactly what it is, what it does, its ethos and its history. Interviewers will not be impressed if you do not know this basic information.

Understand the recruitment channels: employers all use very different forms of recruitment, so any successful job searching requires a good knowledge and understanding of how to exploit them to your advantage.  Some of the recruitment channels that are used include:

  1. Online through sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn
  2. Via Recruitment Agencies
  3. Speculative Applications
  4. Print Media
  5. Word of Mouth
  6. Networking (either online or face to face)
