Professor Andy Alderson

Professional biography:

Professor Andy Alderson is the Deputy Director of the Centre for Materials Research and Innovation (CMRI) and has held the position of Professor of Materials Physics since 2005. He received his BSc (1st Class Honours, 1987) and his Doctorate (1991) in physics from the University of Liverpool, UK. From 1992-1995 he was a Research Associate at Liverpool working on theoretical investigations into auxetic materials. His research into auxetic materials continued during 1995-1998 when he was a Research Associate in the Advanced Materials team at BNFL, where he also undertook research into conductive polymers. He joined the University of Bolton in 1998 and was the Acting Head of the CMRI at Bolton during its implementation phase from January to October 2003. He was a Director of I-zone Incubation Ltd (2002 to 2004) and is currently Technical Director of the University spin-out company Auxetic Technologies Ltd (since 2004). He chaired the Steering Group of the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)-funded Auxetic Materials Network (AuxetNet – www.auxetnet.org.uk|; rated 'Outstanding/Internationally leading' by the EPSRC), has served on 4 EPSRC panels and is a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College since 2003. He is a member of the Management Committee of the Northwest Composites Centre involving the universities of Bolton, Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster in the UK (since 2006). He has published around 90 papers, is a co-inventor on 7 patent applications, has appeared in NWDA 'Young Foresight' and BBC2 TV 'Learning Zone' programmes (2006), and on the BBC Radio 4 'The Material World' programme (2005). He has been involved in collaborative research programmes worth over £9M, of which £2M has been directly attributed to his research activities; currently he is the Coordinator of the Technology Strategy Board-funded REACTICS consortium (2006-2009; value £1M) and is the Bolton lead contact on the EC Framework 6 Programme CHISMACOMB project (2005-2008; value €3M).
