Design Technology

We offer a broad range of subjects for study in the field of design – from the chic and stylish world of fashion and textiles to the new, cutting-edge technology of special effects.

What these courses share is a focus on developing creative, practical, relevant skills that will prepare you for a stimulating and rewarding career within your chosen sector of the design world.

Of course, we know that innovation and creativity is central to bold and adventurous design; and to make that possible we offer outstanding facilities for our design students.

In fact, we will go so far as to say that we offer some of the best facilities in the UK.

Our design studio facilities are a centre for ideas and creativity. We have four floors fitted with the latest design technology for practicing designers, technologists and students from the full range of design disciplines including fashion, textiles, engineering, architecture, graphics, animation, games, electronics and product design.

Close to the design studio is the Product Development Studio, a purpose-built facility which is equipped with computer-aided design and analysis software, rapid prototyping systems and 3D laser scanning.

The Innovation Factory, opened in 2007, contains extensive resources including specialist workshops and laboratories for textile manufacture, automotive engineering, mechanical engineering, composite materials, special effects, model making, sculpture and fine art.

We recognise that good design is not just about bright ideas and innovation. To underpin that creative spark, we place just as much emphasis on ensuring you have a thorough understanding of the broader theories and principles of design and that you are fully prepared for the realities of the commercial and business world.

Though you will spend a significant proportion of your studies in a studio-based environment, you will also attend lectures, seminars and tutorials. There are many opportunities to attend UK and international conferences and exhibitions, and you will take part in study visits and work placements.

We have close links with industry and this is enhanced by the research, development and consultancy services which we provide to businesses in the North West and further afield. The valuable insights and experience that these contacts generate is fed back into our courses, ensuring you are up-to-date with the latest design developments and trends.

As one of our students, you may well find yourself involved in some of this work, or as part of a team working on a live project with private businesses or public organisations who are looking to benefit from the University's capabilities. Some of our students have recently been involved in development work on the iTeddy, one of the winners of the BBC programme Dragons' Den, and on "True Brit", the design of a range of British-inspired clothes for high street fashion chain New Look.

So, have a look at the courses we offer, check out our great facilities and see how we can help you get started on your career as a professional in the world of design.
