Mechanical Structures Group, MSG

This group's activities are interconnected through the areas of engineering materials, structures and systems centering on (i) crashworthiness of transport structures and bodies (ii) mechanical behaviour of composites materials and (iii) engineering systems and simulation.

Crashworthiness

Professor Chirwa |has established an international reputation at Bolton and leads BAARG|, a centre for vehicle crashworthiness with successful networks across Europe through achievement of FP6 programme funding, eg ROLLOVER and APROSYS (34 Companies & universities). Related work to wheel chair safety systems commenced in 2007 (FP6).

Composites Structures

Work concentrates of the mechanical behaviour under a variety of loads (heat, impact and compression after impact) and relates to successful outcomes with the Fire Group in composites and with TTG in ballistic materials (Professor Myler|). Applied research has been developed in partnership with Airbus Industries, BAe, Bombardier, Boeing and Advanced Composites Ltd.

Engineering Systems & Simulation

Dr Erping Zhou's |work focuses on intelligent control in manufacture (eg 3D-diode laser marking with University of Manchester) and testing (eg neural networks for coating measurement with Elcomter Instrumentation Ltd.).
