Fire Materials Group (FMG)
This, world class unique UK academic group studies the multidisciplinary area of fire safe materials and collaborates with all major research groups worldwide, eg Lille (France), Alessandria (Italy), NIST, Polytech Brooklyn and Milwaukee (USA), Hefei and Sichuan Uni (China), IIT Delhi (India), Poznan and Warsaw (Poland), Budapest (Hungary). Collaboration is also fostered with UK industry and relevant academics, including other research groups (MSG|, SMSG|). Research interests include textile, composite and polymer fire and heat resistance, novel flame retardant systems and mechanisms and fire gas analysis and related toxicity.
Work with nanoclays in composites (EPSRC: 2002)) showed synergistic clay/FR interactions. Current work measures and models fire damage to composite structures in collaboration with the Centre for Civil and Construction Engineering, University of Manchester (EPSRC: 2005-08)
