Summary of Courses in Electronics

The provision of courses in electronics at Bolton covers a wide range and provides a seamless progression from HND/BEng(Hons) through to MSc and PhD. The main relationships between courses are shown in the diagram below.

 

Progression routes at Bolton

 

Entry to the HND course is 80 UCAS credits or equivalent. On completion of the course you will obtain a Higher National Diploma.

If you obtain a high grade pass in the first year of your studies, you may be eligible to transfer to the second year of the BEng(Hons), after completing a 6 month bridging course.

 

BEng in Electronic and Computer Engineering

Entry to the BEng course is 200 UCAS credits and on completion of the course you will obtain a BEng(Hons) in Electronic and Computer Engineering. This will allow you to carry on your studies by taking an MSc, which takes 1 year full time or 3 years part time. Alternatively you may register for a PhD, which will involve you in research work for a further 3 years.

MSc Advanced Electronics Design by full-time study

The full-time MSc in Advanced Electronics Design is studied at Bolton over a period of 12 months starting in February or September. Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma awards are also possible by the same route, taking less time: 4 and 8 months respectively.

MSc Advanced Microelectronics by part-time distance learning

MSc Electronic Product Development by part-time distance learning

Part-time MSc degrees in Electronic Product Development and Advanced Microelectronics are studied entirely by distance learning (e-learning), over the internet. It is not necessary to travel to Bolton to study these degrees as all the study, tutoring and assessment is conducted over the internet.

PhD Degrees- Doctor of Philosophy Degrees

These degrees are obtained by carrying out research at an advanced level for at least 3 years, in a subject area that is of interest to both yourself and the staff in the university. PhD degrees may be obtained by working ful-time or part-time.
