Welcome to the Electronics Subject Area
Electronics is an important activity in the university involving seven areas:
-
HND and BEng(Hons) programmes studied full time
-
MSc programmes studied full time
-
MSc programmes studied part time by distance learning (www.ami.ac.uk)
-
MSc programmes running overseas under a dual award arrangement (Soest - Germany)
-
Research - PhD supervisions at Bolton and at Soest - Germany
-
Collaborative programmes (CEESI)
-
Industrial links and enterprise
The teaching provision ranges from HND through BEng (Hons) to MSc and on to research, offering multi-entry, multi-exit opportunities. All the degree programmes are characterised by applications-focussed and problem-based activities underpinned by academic rigour.
Electronics is part of the School of Built Environment and Engineering. Approximately 130 students (full time equivalent) are in electronics and currently 6 full-time and 6 part-time academic staff are involved in the delivery of the electronics programmes.
The electronics discipline was audited by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in November 2005 and contributed to the overall satisfactory rating of "Broad Confidence" for the University of Bolton as a whole. The postgraduate courses were singled out for particular praise. Successive external examiner reports; QAA audits; and reviews by professional bodies have noted the high regard the students hold for the electronics staff and their courses
Bolton's graduates are in great demand worldwide because of their practical experience and relevant skills. According to a forecast by Henley Management College in March 2006 this situation seems certain to continue:
"Certain disciplines, including electrical/electronic and systems engineering, are seen as particularly likely to be of increasing importance. Looking at particular skills and attributes, there is strong evidence that the top priorities in terms of future skills will be practical application, theoretical understanding, and creativity and innovation."
