BAARG is a leading research centre of excellence in the field of Structural Crashworthiness, Impact Biomechanics, Safety and Accident Investigation. The centre is internationally distinguished for its enormous contributions to the understanding of crashworthiness and general safety. We are thus committed to maintain the highest standards of research, education and knowledge transfer.

BAARG's mission is to discover new knowledge through research and disseminate it so that it can be employed by practitioners in design for structures that save lives in crashes.

BAARG's research as assessed under the RAE (Research Assessment Exercise - 2008) of UK universities has global reach with 65% as World Leading (4*) and 35% as Internationally Excellent (3*)|. As a group specialising in Crashworthiness, BAARG is ranked No. 1 in the UK and around the world it is in the top 10. Hence BAARG's distinguished characteristics.

BAARG was founded in 1992, and is situated within the School of Built Environment and Engineering. Its research work contributes to the work of the Mechanical Structures Research Group (MSG)| within the University.

BAARG under the leadership of Professor Clive Chirwa, in 1995, founded The International Journal of Crashworthiness (IJCrash) |a peer reviewed technical journal with an Impact Index. The first twelve years the journal was published by Woodhead Publishing Co. of Abingdon Hall in Cambridge, UK and now it is in the hands of Taylor & Francis of Abingdon Oxon in Oxford, UK.

BAARG under the leadership of Professor Clive Chirwa founded The International Crashworthiness Conference (ICRASH)| series of conferences that are held biannually around the world since 1998.

BAARG's resources comprise modern state-of-art laboratories, research staff and postgraduate students with recognised experience in crashworthiness. Its impact on crashworthiness design of road & rail vehicles, air & spacecraft, not forgetting sea vehicles, offshore platforms and nuclear plants has positioned BAARG in the premier league of world institutions studying this complex area of safety.

BAARG hopes to have contributed to the improved safety of vehicle occupants, pedestrians and cyclists through its research outcomes and consultancy work. Its quality and professionalism is second to none, hence its motto of "Safety First - Quality is Our Strength"
