The School of Built Environment and Engineering was formed in February 2007, as a result of the restructuring of the University into 5 schools of study.

The School incorporates the following subject areas:

• Construction
• Civil Engineering
• Health & Safety
• Electronic Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Automobile Engineering
• Product Design & Development
• Fashion & Textiles

The School is managed by the Dean of School, Alan Cornthwaite, and five Principal Lecturers each with responsibility for a specific area activity, namely;

• Subject Leader Built Environment and Health and Safety
• Subject Leader Engineering and Design
• Professional Standards and Practice
• Research & Enterprise
• Marketing and External Relations

Our professoriate consists of two professors, Professor Myler (Engineering Analysis & Design) and Professor Chirwa (Automotive & Aerospace Structures), together with two Readers in the Built Environment area.

In addition to the above, the School currently comprises 50 academic staff, 5 enterprise staff, 12 technical support staff, 8 administrative support staff and 7 research students.

Our offices and teaching facilities are located on the Deane Campus of the University, and incorporate the Innovation Factory, the Design Studio area of Senate House, the Product Development Studio and the Calderwood Building, where the Built Environment laboratories are housed.

We are recognised nationally as a provider of high quality education in the Built Environment and Engineering, with excellent results in the National Student Satisfaction survey. In addition, many of our courses are accredited by professional bodies.

We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, ranging from traditional subjects to new, exciting areas such as robotics, special effects development, interior design and fashion product development.

We also have several areas of excellence in research, including Inclusive and Sustainable Environments, Mechanical Structures, Technical Textiles and Medical Devices.
