The Trustees of the Marriott Fund has awarded the University of Bolton a significant donation over the next five years. The donation is given primarily for the benefit of students, academics and the University, through locally funded projects.
It is intended the projects will benefit the whole community of Bolton and the Scholarships are designed to promote international understanding as described in the forth object of Rotary International Movement*. The parties concerned are keen to promote and publicise the town of Bolton, the University and values of the Rotary both locally and internationally.
Over the next five years the University's Schools and departments are invited to apply for funding to support projects under the following headings.
1.0 Rotary foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships- An International programme for students and teachers up to 40 years administrated through the Rotary Club of Bolton Le Moors and Rotary Foundation to establish and strengthen ties between higher education institutions and the rotary movement across the world.
2.0 The John Marriott Rotary Award - funding to address a community need through a period of study, research or a project at the University of Bolton under the following: The projects may be jointly funded through the University and other working partners e.g. Primary Health Care Trust or a local commercial company.
2.1 Post-Graduate Professional Research Programme- a Student working with a University of Bolton academic on a research issue in Bolton, for example a Health and social science 3rd year undergraduate working with a consultant in Geriatrics from the Royal Bolton, supported by the primary care trust and social services on social care issues in an ageing population-elder abuse; care at home; housing issues, local community, health treatment etc
2.2 Professional Knowledge Transfer- aimed at graduate level students working on live projects in a business or organisation e.g improving or developing new products, developing a marketing strategy, streamlining a manufacturing process. Projects would last for 6-12 months draw on the knowledge of a fresh graduate, the expertise of academics, the University's facilities and help improve the performance of a small business or organisation. The student gains a valuable employment skills through early leadership exposure on a project.
2.3 Student Bursary- the bursary will provide funding for students from Bolton who wish to engage in local community leadership programmes through volunteering but are prevented because of financial difficulty. Examples include mentoring young people in schools and sport in the community.
2.4 Student Scholarship- a scholarship to provide assistance to bright students who would struggle to come to university for financial or personal reasons. This scholarship would be named the The John Marriot Scholarship' and target those wanting to enter accountancy or finance.
2.5 Research Bursaries:- enable students to embark on a research career in academic or professional R&D
