Close to the cities of Liverpool and Manchester, with their internationally renowned cultural, sporting and retail centres, Bolton also puts entertainment and shopping right on your doorstep.

A 12 screen multiplex cinema, ten-pin bowling, shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and 24 hour supermarkets can be found at the Middlebrook Leisure Park. The Valley Centretainment leisure complex offers a similar range of facilities.
The university actively supports the exciting professional Octagon Theatre, which features plenty of new drama, great classics and comedies all at reasonable prices with a coffee house and bar. A wide range of art exhibitions is held at the Central Museum and Art Gallery. This is supplemented with guest lectures and seminars. There is also an excellent library and aquarium. On the Deane campus, a large multi-court sports hall caters for a wide range of sports from badminton through to volleyball. The gym houses a range of cardio vascular and resistance equipment, plus some free weights, and is very good value for money for students. There is also a climbing wall located in the sports centre, which is suitable for beginners through to the more experienced climber.
Outside the university, there are public football pitches, golf courses, riding schools, sports centres and public swimming pools as well as facilities for a wide range of other sports.
The region is particularly good for watching live sport, with the excellent Reebok Stadium, home to the Bolton Wanderers football team. Bolton Arena is the Regional Tennis Centre and hosts national tennis events. International cricket is in nearby Manchester, while for rugby league supporters, Wigan is just up the road.
Bolton has excellent motorway and rail links to major cities. The Lake District, West Pennine Moors and the Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach, and the bright lights of Blackpool are just an hour away.
