The University's strategic plan prioritises the development of our track record in research, discovery and innovation.  This includes work in materials research and innovation and the built environment.

Work related to the environment and sustainability in the built environment includes, but is not limited to:

• building structures and materials
• housing management and maintenance
• sustainable construction and development
• transport studies
• urban regeneration
• waste and recycling

The University also has research programmes in renewable energy sources, in particular the development of more efficient photo-voltaic cells to maximise solar energy supported. These programmes are supported by the Technology Strategy Board, the North West Knowledge Centre for Materials Chemistry and the Joule Centre.
