We have always been about giving students quality at a highly competitive price. We have used the Government’s new strategy for competition in HE to price our courses to reflect what it costs us to teach them. Is it fair that a student who studies a subject that is largely classroom based, such as creative writing, pays the same as a student studying a subject in expensive facilities, purpose-built to suit their subject’s demands? We don’t think so either and that is why we have introduced a fee structure which is not only equitable but also pledges 'no profiteering'. We think you will also agree ours is the best value for money in our region.

Of course you will have other costs to consider too, the cost of accommodation will also be figuring in your expenses – here too we offer quality and great value for money. Weekly fees for the academic year 2011/2 in our Halls of Residence will be £69.75, and private accommodation can cost significantly less. Our 2012/13 fee will be similar.
Next year we will be opening our Bolton One facilities, a £31 million building which not only houses state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities, but also new leisure facilities for students – a new gym, sports hall, swimming pool and dance studio are all part of this amazing complex we can’t wait to see completed. In addition, in excess of £10 million has been spent on significant improvements to the existing estate and teaching facilities over the past three years.
The Government’s White Paper talks about putting students at the heart of the system; the University of Bolton has always held its students at the heart of its world. When we ask our students what they value highly one point that comes back time and time again is our commitment to the individual. We believe you are ‘a name, not a number’ and that is one of our key strengths.
What I want you to remember when you look at newspaper league tables is the information on which they are based is at least two years out of date. Would you make a decision on investing in anything else, based on information two years old? Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?
So what I am saying to you is make an informed decision on 2011 information. Come and meet us. Visit our facilities. Choose us and you will be joining a University with a strong future.

Vice-Chancellor, University of Bolton
