Welcome to the Faculty of Wellbeing and Social Sciences. The Faculty comprises a diverse range of academic areas, including Business, Education, Accountancy and Law, Health, Community Studies, Psychology and Sport. In each of these areas, we have a simple aim – and that is to provide you with opportunities to study for the qualifications which will equip you for the best jobs in your field. We can be confident in this aim, because all of our programmes provide academic perspectives alongside experience-based insights from the professional field.
To illustrate the above point, the University in partnership with NHS Bolton, and Bolton MBC has invested £31m in Bolton One which opened in February 2012 as a Centre of Excellence for Health and Wellbeing. Bolton One provides the Faculty with clinical skills laboratory facilities; a rehabilitation suite, including rehabilitation clinics; sports injury and exercise and conditioning clinics as well as bright and modern teaching and seminar rooms. The provision of health, leisure and education under one roof provides a unique environment for our students in health, sports, psychology and community studies where teaching and research alongside state-of-the-art facilities and services for the public.
The Faculty also enjoys a blossoming research culture, with more and more academic staff engaging with research in their professional field. Research in health and social policy was rated ‘World-leading’ in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, and Research in Psychology was rated ‘Internationally significant’. With an emphasis on applied research, the Faculty is able to provide an expert base in a range of professional areas.
