Creative, Media and Cultural Studies

In the creative, media and cultural studies arena, we aim to develop and enhance your creative, critical and analytical abilities.

By offering an adventurous range of learning opportunities, we provide a space for experiment and growth that will support you in your journey towards creative and critical independence and professional capability.  Our programmes offer:

  • Purpose built professional production facilities, including:
    • video production studios, with lighting grid, fresnel studio lights, lighting mixer, black, white, green-screen chromakey curtains, high resolution video projector, electric video projection screen, AV playback equipment, and surround-sound audio
    • Apple Mac Pro video editing suites with DV/HDV capture decks, monitor speakers, external broadcast monitor, two TFT displays
    • Sound room that comprises a control room and sound-proofed audio booth for voiceover/foley/music recording, plus a range of audio mixers and audio software
    • Computer suite of Apple Mac Pro computers for editing and post-production
    • Equipment store that contains a wide range of portable digital video cameras (DV/HDV/XDCAM EX formats), audio and lighting equipment
    • Production office for production meetings, screenings and tutorials.
  • We believe it is of paramount importance that all of our creative students experience involvement in a live, professional environment to help prepare them well for there chosen careers.  One of our graduates, Matt Mills, won the BBC Writersroom Future Talent Award for a script he completed in the final year of the University's media writing and production degree.
  • Together with the Octagon Theatre (Bolton), the English and creative writing students are able to take a module delivered at the theatre. Students have access to the rehearsal sessions and can talk to the director and other artists.
  • We enjoy creative partnerships with the BBC, Octagon Theatre and Write Out Loud poets, as well as support from the Arts Council for our readings programme. Many of our students participate in student film festivals nationally and internationally.
  • All of our teaching staff have extensive experience and levels of achievement in their subject area. All have had work published or produced, either in the form of academic books and papers; literary work such as poetry, novels and plays; or work for screen, TV and radio.

These fantastic features will allow you to make the most of your potential and establish a professional basis for your career in the creative, media or cultural sectors.
