Art and Design

Studying one of our art and design courses gives you a broad-based learning experience that will develop your creative skills and enhance your professional art and design practice.

We aim to expand your practical knowledge in your chosen media, extend your understanding of the art and design world and help you to cultivate a critical awareness of your own and others' work.

Recent investment here at the University of Bolton means that we offer state-of-the-art facilities, including:

  • A new custom-designed, photography area with:
    • four well-equipped studios
    • digital camera backs
    • dedicated computer suite, and facilities to produce high quality colour and black and white prints digitally
    • fully equipped conventional darkrooms
  • Excellent IT facilities in all areas of the School with access to the latest design software including CAD and Adobe Creative Suite
  • New purpose-built facilities for fine artists and designers
  • Wide-format digital suites for textiles students with facilities to print onto fabric and textiles.
  • A well-equipped 3D area that includes wood and metal working facilities, aluminium casting, ceramics, and printmaking.
  • Purpose-built fine art studios for painting, sculpture and digital art.

Each year we aim to arrange at least one overseas study visit, and over the last three years have taken groups of students to Florence, New York, Tokyo and Toronto.

Photography also has links to our postgraduate programme in Dalian, China which offers a vibrant pathway progression for those that wish to pursue this fascinating subject.

Many of our courses have a flexible structure, enabling you to explore different media and discover your creative strengths and preferences; on the other hand, this flexibility gives you the option to focus on particular areas of interest and develop your individual specialism, particularly as you progress in your studies and grow in confidence.

Many of our courses are built around a diverse and challenging series of practical assignments which will stretch your creative and intellectual abilities.

Our programmes are delivered by enthusiastic teaching staff who are established practitioners in their specialist field. They are supported by staff from other specialist areas within the School of Arts, Media and Education as well as a number of technicians who manage the facilities of the School.

What we offer is a broad learning experience that will enable you to grow on a personal, intellectual and creative level and give you the skills and knowledge to continue with your professional practice as an artist and designer after you graduate.
