Postgraduate courses in Arts, Media and Education
Postgraduate provision in the School of Arts Media and Education at the University of Bolton caters for a wide range of needs and interests.
In Education there is provision for a variety of areas of postgraduate teacher training at certificate, diploma and masters levels, specialising in the post-compulsory sector. There is particular depth of expertise in inclusive education and e-learning with the school having appointed a reader in the latter. Education also has a long and distinguished track-record of teacher training and professional development in the area of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), where we have similar depth of expertise. The school is receptive to applications for research in all these areas at both MPhil and PhD levels.
In the area of Cultural and Creative Studies, the school offers masters provision in Creative Writing and Children's Literature, besides taking on research students in these areas (MPhil and PhD levels) and others (especially Philosophy, Film Studies and Modernism).
Finally, in Arts and Media, the school has masters courses in Photography, running both in the UK and internationally (in China), in Digital Image and Media, and in Public Art. Once again, the school is receptive to anyone wishing to research these areas at higher levels (MPhil or PhD).
It should be noted that, aside from the traditional PhD (or doctorate), there are now alternative routes that might respond more to individual circumstances. We offer a PhD by Professional Practice, which resembles what is often termed a 'professional doctorate' (or EdD). This allows professionals, in whatever field, to put forward a case for their work (a project, an initiative) being innovative in some way, and documenting this in a portfolio of work. Finally, there is a PhD by Publication, which itself has two options: those who have already published either academic or creative work, can apply to submit this, together with an analytical commentary, to be considered for an award. Alternatively, a researcher can commit to publishing their work prospectively, in a number of identified academic or creative outlets, again providing an analytical commentary on what they have achieved.
Below is a list of the named awards we offer, together with links providing more information. If you have any queries, don't hesitate to get in touch.
