GUN AND KNIFE CRIME AND SERIOUS FEATHER'S THINK TWICE VIDEO

09.06.2009

The University got a mention in Parliament yesterday during an Early Day Motion by Tony Lloyd.  Jane Sturart has been working with Serious Feather, a Manchester based production company for about 18 months and is supportive of their new music video to tackle gun and knife crime.

Lloyd, Tony

From www.parliment.co.uk|

That this House recognises that young people are most likely to be the victims of gun and knife attacks; believes that whilst everyone must be part of the solution, young people are key to changing attitudes and saving lives; welcomes the release of Marvin `Crown Jewelz' Gilbert's video Think Twice which is designed to bring attention to the dangers of gun and knife attacks; applauds the work of the Manchester-based production company Serious Feather which commissioned and released the video without charge; notes the work of young people in education at Trafford College and Salford and Bolton universities which made all this possible; commends the efforts of Brett Gregory, Ann-Marie Lawrence, Nic Jackson and Alistair Topping; and hopes that the video will be widely viewed and promoted by the media.

BABY Exhibition

Ian Beesley course leader for the MA in international photojournalism, documentary and travel photography has some of his work included in a major exhibition at the National Media Museum Bradford.

Baby picturing the ideal human was curated by Hedy van Erp and Iris Sikking from the ICON Foundation in the Netherlands. Using a wide range of photographs, this exhibition explores the portrayal of the western baby throughout the history of photography.

The exhibition is divided into sections: Birth, Realism, Madonna, Pageants and Idealism.   Ian's work is represented in the realism and Madonna sections and also in supporting exhibition entitled Bradford babies, this includes work from the Born in Bradford research project, which is a longitudinal birth cohort study. The study will follow the lives of 10,000 Bradford babies over the next 20 years to help unravel the complex tangle of genetic, lifestyle and environmental influences on health and well-being. In particular why the infant mortality rate in Bradford is almost twice the UK average?

Ian's project will aim to engage the local community in the Born in Bradford project, explain its aims, raise its profile and encourage participation, ownership and understanding of the medical research behind the study. Working closely with the research team, and the midwifery staff at the Bradford Royal Infirmary the photographer Ian Beesley is creating work that will reflect on the past, the present and the future of children's health and welfare and encourage the collaboration of parents and researchers in the interpretation of the research through creative means.

Ian recently received a major arts council grant to continue this work.

Material in the exhibition is drawn from over fifty collections around the world and includes the work of social documentary photographer/ course leader of MA Photography University of Bolton Ian Beesley.

Recent Media, Writing and Production graduate Matt Mills was awarded the BBC
Writers Room Future Talent Award for Writers 2009.

BBC Award Winner

The award was part of 6 awards handed out by the BBC at the Education

MediaCityUK in partnership with BBC writersroom announced this development
opportunity for talented drama and comedy writers last autumn.

Matt's script 'Here Lies John Hobbs' was selected as one of three scripts

The BBC writersroom Future Talent Award for Writers 2009 will enable Matt to
be given development opportunities and mentoring within the BBC.

The panel said that they had a very difficult job at choosing the winner and
described Matt's submission as a dark, distinctive and compelling detective
drama set in Greater Manchester called 'Here Lies John Hobbs' which showed
real originality, a strong central character and an exciting emerging voice.

Annual Tri-lingual Mushaira

The annual Tri-lingual Mushaira, organised by the Gujerati Writers' Guild UK, is an increasingly important event in Bolton's cultural calendar.

A mushaira is a celebration of poetry, read aloud for the community (who will often join in appreciatively with the refrain). This year's Bolton event (held recently at the Muslim Community Centre in Astley Street) featured contributions in three distinct traditions – Gujerati, Urdu and English. Short Film Competition

The Environment Agency are launching a Short Film Competition to all universities and colleges across the North West. The Short Film competition is essentially aimed at 3rd Year students who are studying Film and TV, however it is open to all students of any course and year. All you have to do is submit a movie, storyboard or script or indeed a combination of both to one or both of the two briefs that have been set to combat the effects of climate change looking at flooding and water efficiency.

The winning students from each of the briefs will see their film produced and used by the Environment Agency to communicate these messages. The winning students will be selected from a panel of judges made up from Phil Redmond, Jessica Smith the Climate Change Champion and the Environment Agency Regional Director and Regional Communications Manager for the North West.

This is a great opportunity for students to work from live briefs along with gaining experience from seeing their film go from a storyboard to reality.

Briefs can be downloaded below and at www.tomorrowsworldcompetition.co.uk|, along with information about the judges and a copy of the poster. If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact Alexis Bird  or Rachel Emson on 0161 819 5140

'Regenerate' A New Development Initiative for Public Artists

August / Septmber 2008

Bolton has always had a history of supporting creative talent and this autumn is no exception.  Bolton Council, in collaboration with the University of Bolton and Bolton at Home's Housing Percent for Art team have announced a new £18,000 programme that supports the development of public art and space within the Borough.

The programme, 'Regenerate', will be launched at the end of September with a 12 month mentoring scheme aimed at developing the skills of 8 emerging artists working within the public art realm. Artists are currently being invited to apply for the one to one mentoring scheme via the town's creative web portal, 'The Nerve Centre': www.thenervecentre.org.uk|.

Said Rebecca Albrow, Creative Industries Project Manager at the University of Bolton; "The Public Art agenda has been a key priority for the town for a number of years and we are very proud of the progress that has been made.  The town has a rich portfolio of both public art sculptures and community projects, but we now feel that investment has to be made into developing the skills of emerging artists.  We are excited to offer an accredited professional practice scheme that will see 8 artists mentored by some of the region's outstanding designers of public space & art.

Gaynor Cox, Housing Arts Officer for Bolton at Home continued by saying; 'The programme will bring together the expertise of colleagues across the North West to deliver a training programme that will benefit the Housing Percent for Art service by developing and retaining the skills of public artists in Bolton".

Further developments are planned for 2009 and will include a national conference exploring the relationship between commissioning bodies, architects, developers and artists.  Furthermore, four events are scheduled to take place throughout 2009 aimed at addressing key priorities for professional artists. If you would further details on the 'Regenerate' programme please visit www.thenervecentre.org.uk| or email info@thenervecentre.org.uk|.
