Dr Jonathan Kelly

Senior Lecturer

Jonathan is a Senior Lecturer in the Mathematics department at the University of Bolton. He recalls being interested in mathematics from a young age, seduced by its rigour and precision: I have always enjoyed mathematics as it’s one of the few subjects in which you can be sure whether you are either right or wrong! Of course, as Jonathan admits, such definitive answers can be found provided the questions being asked are clearly defined to begin with.

It was this notion of a problem being "well-posed" that led him to the field of partial differential equations during his PhD at Leeds Metropolitan University: I began exploring how to mathematically model the flow of heat through materials, particularly how to implement constitutive relations and boundary conditions. Exact solutions to such problems may not exist, so the need to resort to computer algorithms or numerical approximations guided me to numerical analysis. It is within this field of numerical analysis that Jonathan conducts the majority of work, actively embodying the strategy of the University by allowing his research to directly inform his teaching.

The techniques he employs naturally find applications in many areas and consequently he is in active collaboration with colleagues in the Engineering department. Such techniques are discussed, as well as actively investigated by the collection of real heat flow data, during Jonathan's lecture modules on the Mathematics degree at the UoB.
