How to Write your UCAS Personal Statement

The personal statement is a key part of your UCAS application. It's your chance to describe your ambitions, skills, and experience to your five chosen university choices. You'll need to write it in 650 words or less. So, what should you include in your personal statement? Keep reading to find out!

Start by researching the course you're applying for and making sure that it's the right fit for you. Then, take some time to brainstorm your goals and objectives for pursuing your degree. What do you hope to accomplish? What skills do you hope to gain? How will this course help you achieve your long-term goals? Be sure to mention any relevant work experience or extra-curricular activities in your personal statement as well.

Next, focus on highlighting your most relevant skills and experiences. Do you have experience leading teams or projects? Do you have strong communication skills? If you’ve had previous jobs or voluntary work experience before; what were they and what skills did they teach you? Just like when you were writing your first draft of your CV for a part-time job after completing your GCSEs at school, universities want to read your personal statement and instantly know that you are likely to be an asset to their institution. Whatever your strengths may be, be sure to showcase them. Remember, the admissions staff are looking for evidence that you have the potential to succeed on their course.

Finally, wrap up your personal statement by briefly discussing your motivation for pursuing the degree you wish to study. Why does this particular course appeal to you? How will it help you achieve your career goals? Be sure to end on a positive note, highlighting your excitement for starting the course.
