Dental Technology: Then and Now

Dental technology has hugely advanced over recent years; and in an industry where 80% of UK adults are visiting the dentist regularly, it’s clear that this is a prominent industry with great career prospects.

Today, we have access to an incredible array of dental technologies that make it possible to achieve levels of oral health that were once thought impossible. From simple dental items like the traditional toothbrush to the new smart electric brush, and complex technologies like artificial intelligence, digital dental X-rays, and CAD/CAM dentistry, there is no doubt that dental technology has revolutionised the historical nature of the dental industry.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) 

When we think of the increase of robots taking over the roles of humans in the workplace, AI will probably be at the forefront of your mind.  

Historically, a major challenge in the dental industry has been the inconsistency of patient diagnoses across different dentists. This is where machine-learning comes into its element. By creating AI models that train using years of professional dental experience, it can: 
 
- Create more consistency and alignment between dentists and X-rays 
- Increase case acceptance and boost patient trust – AI helps to increase the quality of patient care 
- Support patient diagnosis – although AI isn’t smarter than a dentist, its ability to encode dentist-level understanding into the deep-learning models means that it can hold much more data than any human is capable of 
- Support the dental hiring and training process – the integration of AI in the industry is giving candidates something to be excited about when applying for a job in the industry; making the sector a much more attractive one to enter

Digital Dental X-Rays  

Another exciting piece of dental technology that is changing the face of dentistry is digital dental X-rays. Used to evaluate a patient's teeth, jaw, and underlying bone structure, these are now essential diagnostic tools. This is because, with traditional 2D X-rays, it can be difficult for dentists to get an accurate picture of a patient's mouth, which can make the diagnosis and treatment planning process more challenging. Digital X-rays solve this problem by providing detailed, 3D images of a patient's mouth that can be viewed from any angle.  

This enhanced level of accuracy is particularly useful for implant placement and other complex dental procedures. As a result, digital x-rays are quickly becoming standard process in many dental offices around the world.  

CAD/CAM Dentistry Systems  

Finally, we have Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) dentistry systems. These systems use CAD and CAM technologies to create custom dental prosthetics like crowns, bridges, and implants. The CAD portion of the system is used to create a digital model of the desired prosthetic while the CAM portion is used to mill or 3D print the prosthetic, according to the specifications set by the CAD software.  

What's great about CAD/CAM systems is that they allow dental laboratories to create custom prosthetics very quickly and easily. This convenience factor is one reason why CAD/CAM systems are becoming increasingly popular. 

Technologies such as CAD/CAM dentistry systems are prime examples of what would never have been possible before the advancement of dental technologies.
