Taught by the University of Bolton in collaboration with expert clinical practitioners from practice, this course will support you to develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions, exploring presentations and clinical management.

Our experienced and knowledgeable team will support you as you develop advanced knowledge and clinical skills in the systematic assessment of patients who present with acute and chronic respiratory disease. An understanding of normal physiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology underpin respiratory medicine so we’ll help you to build your knowledge of these concepts. We’ll provide an overview of different respiratory conditions; for instance, pulmonary infection, airways disease, cancer, interstitial lung disease, autoimmune diseases, sleep-related breathing. We’ll also support you as you explore the role of a range of diagnostic tests (including pulmonary function tests, chest x-rays, computed tomography (CT) imaging and arterial blood gas sampling) and help you learn to interpret the results of such investigations.

Clinical management in respiratory medicine requires significant interaction with many other specialties within the hospital and primary care setting so we’ll focus on building your understanding of the interface between respiratory medicine and acute medicine, ambulatory care and primary care. You’ll also learn about effective discharge planning and follow-up for patients with respiratory conditions.

This advanced professional development course adopts a blended learning approach, using the principles of problem-based learning to develop your enquiry skills and place this in the context of patient care.

You’ll be introduced to topics through keynote lectures that will involve a mixture of theory, case based discussions and facilitated group discussions. Teaching will be to the wider group to enhance your understanding and decision-making, taking into account what the investigations and interventions represent for the patient. This approach will ensure that you encounter a wide range of case histories and abnormal findings. It will also develop your ability to make defensible decisions rather than simply arriving at the correct answer without a logical argument to back up the decision.

Following the lectures, you’ll be expected to explore each topic in greater depth, and in relation to your own area of practice, through self-directed learning. You’ll be encouraged to consider current research evidence and use this to inform your clinical decision-making and communication skills.

In terms of assessment, you can expect problem-based learning case presentations, interactive quizzes, written assignments, multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and extended matching questions (EMQs) exams.
